Digital Cameras for the Classroom

Teachers: I am asking a favor. I have 5 brand new digital cameras ready for you to use in your classrooms. I need 5 of you to volunteer to buy a memory card for the cameras. The cameras did not come with one and it will only allow 3 pictures without one. I have seen many of the cards on sale during the holiday season. It has to be a card that fits the specific camera. Anyone who agrees to buy the card can use the camera in your classroom for as long as you like.

Changing Passwords

Please remember when prompted to change your password, do it at school on the network. It is so much simpler to change it on a PC. You may use the PC in my room or any of the ones in the library. You need to follow the new guidelines that were given to you when devising your new password (8 characters long- one Capital letter, one number or alphanumeric symbol). Also, please remember the school board will never ask you for username, social security # or password through email. Those are phishing scams.

The iMacs are now set to shut off each afternoon but you have to turn them on in the mornings.

Wireless Access is Here!!

We are now wireless. So, you can now take your laptop anywhere in the building and get on the Internet or our network. Once your laptop is attached to your networked printer you can print wirelessly also. You may still logon via network cable and print with the USB cable if you so choose.

Here are some important info/reminders:

1. Only use your duvalschools.org email account when communicating with parents. Do not use your private account.

2. Log into ALL of your computers at least once a week to run patches and prevent them from becoming disjoined from the network.

3. Your iMacs can be left ON because the District turns them off and back on for you each day.

4. The admin rights issue on the subnet .239 has been resolved. So, if you have a paused printer, I now can resume it for you. Remember, I am the Administrator over all the iMacs but you are the Administrator of your MacBook.

Reminders!!!

Teachers please be reminded that you are asked not to change the printer port. Which means please leave it in the port that the techs used to network your printer so that all of your student desktops can use it. Until the Admin. Rights issue is resolved you can not print to the netork printer while using your MacBook. However, as stated in the OnCourse training meeting you can still use the USB cable (like last year) to print to your laptops.

If your class attendance roll is not correct please send student names to Mrs. Chatman. Thanks to all who have gotten their attendance done on time this week.

Ports

Ports beginning with 169 are considered teacher ports. Ports beginning with 172 are student ports.
Teacher ports have accessability to You Tube, Google Videos and some blogging sites. And they don't have their search terms filtered.

Eventually teacher ports will be placed on a different subnet which will change the path you will take.

Important Technology Information

The Division of Technology has stated that no routers (wireless) or other devices from home may be connected to our network. These devices cause wrong IP addresses to be pulled and may cause DNS settings to be changed.

Please remember to log in through the network to all machines at least once a month to update the anti-virus software and security patches. Failure to log in will cause the machine to be disjoined from the network. Summer months have been extended.

Please keep your e-mail boxes managed. That means clean it out so that it does not get full. Don't forget to empty the TRASH and delete your SENT ITEMS Folder. Do not fall for phishing scams. That is, never give personal information such as SS# or passwords. The school board has all this information and would never have to ask for it. If you do not recognize who the e-mail is from then delete it without opening. Also pay attention to all e-mails from POST OFFICE.

Remember that when you signed the AUP you understood that you can expect NO Privacy when it comes to E-Mail and Internet usage. Security makes personal contact once a number of hits have become noticeable on a weekly report that they run. They said they average the dismissal of one employee a month for inappropriate material. Most of the investigations turn out to be a student logged in under a teacher's log in. Please refrain from doing this and protect all passwords.(Do not keep passwords listed by computer etc.) They did state even though they can see all e-mail, they do not care about viewing this unless a certain person is under investigation.

Remember your students can log in with your help. Username is s******** (s followed by eight digit student number) and Password (last 4 of the student's Social Security number) If your students use desktops in your classroom make sure they are logged in under a student log in. Questions...just e-mail me.

Concerning OnCourse

Please remember to use Firefox as your browser when running OnCourse on the Macs. Safari is not supported. Any problems with your class roll please see/e-mail Cheryl Chatman. It has to be changed in Genesis.
You may begin taking attendance in OnCourse Monday, April 20th. Please take attendance and save it by 9:00a.m. each morning. Please continue to take in on paper as well until further notice.

Technology News

We had 166 students finish the FCAT Explorer so those students will be invited to the Snow Cone Party set for February 12th. The projectors and document cameras that we received through the Magnet grant are in and will be disbursed by Mrs. Davis. Oncourse, the district's new online gradebook program will be coming our way soon. We are set to see an overview on February 18th and then training will take place after FCAT. We will go live with just our attendance the fourth nine weeks.

Good news! We will receive a free upgrade to iLife '09 for our Macs. If you haven't seen all the new things this suite of programs will do check it out here.
